Interview

I had 4 interviews plus 2 assignments. Everything went well and the company gave me only positive signs of me receiving the job. However, they informed me that they decided to go in a different direction to fill the opening after over a month of consistent communication and time-consuming projects.

Interview

Fair warning, this will probably be long, but I'm trying to make it as detailed as possible since there aren't any designer interview reviews! After applying online through their careers portal, I was contacted by a recruiter via email to set up a time to do a phone screen for the position. After I provided my availability, I didn't hear back for 5 days but I was initially able to get something on the calendar. It was during the first call I should've noticed some red flags. As everyone knows, this step in the process is usually for vetting candidates- but I was told off the bat that the HM wanted to meet with me & liked my experience, so the conversation with the recruiter didn't cover my background, what I was looking for, my experience, or anything that's almost always discussed. It seemed very rushed, or that the position was trying to be filled pretty rapidly, but nonetheless, I gave my availability to have the first interview with some members of the design team. The first interview was normal. What I considered weird, was that I fully admit I wasn't on my game like I normally am. I had an awful, crazy day at my present job, and it definitely messed with my head before the call. After it ended I laughed it off and threw my hands up in the air because I assumed I bombed it, but I didn't dwell because I didn't really have a good connection with the HM, so I didn't see it as a loss. Now, this is where it gets even weirder. Within a couple days, they reached out to me saying that they really liked me and wanted me to skip an entire part of the process and go into the "final" round of interviews. I was completely at a loss for words, because I know for SURE that I didn't perform well as I should've. While usually (if the circumstances were different and there was a solid good gut feeling!), I would be super excited about that- my gut was telling me something was off, and the overall feeling I got was that they were rushing pretty hard & just wanted a warm body in the position. After this, I was told what the typical interview process was for designers at BR, and I was kind of shocked. The process is as follows: 1. Call with recruiter 2. Interview with hiring manager/managers 3. Portfolio review with more hiring managers 4. A final almost 5 hour "interview" consisting of - full panel portfolio presentation & QA session - design critique workshop where they provide you with an experience and you have to critique the UX - a whiteboard challenge - a 'background' interview - final interview with managers We as designers know that our interviews are always different & a lot harder than other positions out there. You have to be able to show your thinking, skill, process, etc- and I've interviewed over the last 5 years countless times with many different processes- but I've never seen one as intense as that one. IMO, this process doesn't think about candidates whatsoever, and frankly- wastes a lot of time. Our field is changing & adapting- and it's also a candidates market as of now- so I implore the design/HR leaders to please adapt to the competitve-ness of the industry & skim your process down.

Pretty in depth and informative interview process. Met with four different people and everything was really conversational. Recruiter to final interview was about a month long process. With video calls and phone calls, it felt good. Definitely a little strange since the company is so big and with crossover with other orgs, it was a little confusing on who you were meeting with, but still very smooth process.

The interview process was fairly simple. This was pre covid when you could meet in person. I did forget to bring sample work which I feel could have helped my chances of getting the position.

Interview

Honestly one of the worst candidate experiences I've ever had. After interviewing and it going well, I never heard back from the recruiter even after a half dozen follow ups. I finally get a response months later saying they don't have an update and they don't have any feedback from the team. I send an email to the head of the department, which seems to kickstart my candidacy again to interview again and not hear back. If I didn't know someone in the group who loves it, I wouldn't keep letting them string me along.

Interview Questions

  • One question that stood out asked me about creators that I felt were really doing a great job on social media, a question that tied in with the social aspect of the job.

You really have to come in with a well-rounded knowledge of sports cause you will get grilled. Even if you don't know the answer try not to say that, try to bounce around and get creative with a response. I know it sounds like a Michael Scott move. But this shows you can think on your feet which is super important here.
